Polidactilia pós-axial: tratamento não convencional

Abstract

Polydactyly is one of the most common congenital deformities of the lower extremities, accounting for approximately 45% of congenital foot malformations, with an estimated incidence of 1.7 per 1,000 live births. This condition exhibits considerable anatomical variability regarding the location of duplication and the morphology of the affected rays, making meticulous surgical planning essential to achieve satisfactory functional. Surgical treatment is the standard of care, with the primary goal of creating a functional, plantigrade foot with an acceptable cosmetic appearance. However, controversies remain regarding the optimal timing of surgery and the most appropriate surgical strategy, particularly in cases of postaxial polydactyly in which the fifth ray is better developed than the sixth. Although most techniques described in the literature recommend resection of the more lateral ray, the surgical approach should be individualized according to the anatomical characteristics of each patient. In this case report, we describe a surgical technique used to treat a complex postaxial polydactyly in which resection of the distal portion of the sixth ray was combined with resection of the base of the fifth metatarsal because of the unique anatomical configuration and asymmetric development of the duplicated rays.
